Well it's been a good month since my last entry and not a lot has changed. I have been home in Sydney Australia and begun my training season on February 15. It is a solid season this year and with only two Ironman's to contest this year, I decided to give myself that little extra rest this season and allow the body and mind to be in great spirits for the season. I feel great and for the first time in 10 years this is the most unfit I have ever been at this time of year. The sport is getting more and more competitive and rest like this give you time to plan, recover and extend your acing career. It has been great.
I am now working with Ironman legend Mark Allen to hone my marathon and season this year. It has been interesting our discussions and I am very optimistic about the small changes we have implemented into my program and it is great to be working with someone who really understands this sport and getting the most out of an athlete focused on success in October. I think it will be a great partnership and I am looking forward to the season ahead. Mark was my sporting idol growing up so it has been a real privilege to work closely with him. It has been very interesting hearing his approach to the race and to training in general and in particular how to develop my strength and condition to be peaking in October. It is fascinating stuff, but know one nailed it as well as he did. He worked closely with Tim De boom and Peter Reid with their victories and I have really enjoyed his fresh approach in my season planning.
The big news for many of the people in the sport is the huge money being put up now at Challenge Roth for the World record. This has really sparked my focus this year and I am really looking forward to chasing the record and seeing how it goes. Many of the professionals this year that are racing in Roth are already talking about the record and how difficult it is going to be to get. I just hope conditions are right and we can all push towards a super fast time. The World record has stood for 10 years and it would be great for us all to throw caution to the wind and go for it. The course has been verified and checked by the insurance company and is the same course it has been for the last 5 years. It is now up to us the athletes to chase the mark and hopefully come June we can get close to it. It is a solid focus of mine this year and I am excited about the entire process.
For now it is just logging some long miles and enjoying my time in Australia . Summer is great here and the south of Sydney where I live is just beautiful at this time of year. I really love being home. We are preparing to make our move as a family again back to our base in the USA for the season. I leave Sydney in about 4 weeks and then my family comes up about 1 month later. This year we are moving to the altitude of Boulder Colorado where we will live at 6000 feet. This should give me an edge come racing again at sea level.
Anyway that's about all that's been happening. I hope everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is starting to get back on their bikes and build into the season. It will be on us very shortly. The racing season is only a couple of months away so get busy. Take care of yourself, stay safe on the roads and I will write again very soon. If anybody has any particular questions they would like answered again please feel free to write to the web server and I will answer those in my next monthly post.
Keep smiling,
Macca
