The New Season
With the onset of a new season an athlete always looks for new challenges. For some this is setting new goals of events at longer distances or alternatively improving your performance at key events.
For the professional guys it is the same. We are always setting new goals and targets for a new season and the mapping the training for the season that will be required.
I have just finished putting together my season for 2008 and I have really tried to implement goals and challenges that will keep me interested for the season. To race well in an entire season you need to hold your motivation high and to do this you need to set goals and targets that are both challenging, testing and different. For myself this year I am going to try and defend my Ironman World Championship title in Hawaii . Not only this but I would like to stay undefeated for the season. My season will kick off in reality with the 70.3 event in California and then carry through with an Ironman in Frankfurt , The Quelle Challenge Roth and Hawaii at the end of the season. I will also race the ITU World championships of long course in the year.
I have a busy schedule, but I have achieved everything I have ever wanted in triathlon with 2 world titles, Goodwill Games titles, 7 x World Cup wins, World Cup series wins, 3 years as world number 1 short course triathlete ranked by the ITU, 4 times International Competitor and Triathlete of the Year, 10 Ironman titles, 3 x sub 8 hours for the Ironman and 13 national titles. It is a career that I am very proud of and I want to build upon this further. This year I will try and win two Iron-distances in a very short period, which is almost impossible, but I would like to try. The thing that separates myself from the others, I believe, is that I am not frightened to change and try new things because I have no fear of failure. I don't believe in failure. I have never failed. Failure is dependent upon what you define it against. I believe life and sport is a constant learning curve and with this mindset I have always raced. I win and lose but never fail. I continue to learn and this gets me closer to my personally perceived perfection, which is what I am constantly motivated by.
I hope to learn a lot this year and carry what I have done in the past into my new season. Time will see how it pans out. For everyone else who is planning their new season, set sound goals and targets and chase them with vigour and desire. It will keep you motivated and focused and true to yourself. This is the true measure.
Safe training, Macca
